Nice place, well run and friendly. Very well situated for St Cuthbert's Way and the Border Abbeys. Way. Close to the fleshpots of gentile Melrose...which are good but no bargain. Ideal for walkers and cyclists

Excellent hostel in a very good situation for devotees of Sir Walter Scott. Very convenient for access to the Eildon Hills, which are interesting geologically, and of course reward the walker with great views.

All the border towns are within a reasonable distance of Melrose and there is an excellent bus service in the Borders region. Melrose is an attractive town and there are a number of coffee shops, a theatre, and small businesses, Abbotsford the home of Sir Walter Scott is nearby well worth a visit. For walkers, there are the Eildon Hills - Melrose is the 'hub' for the long distance path network.

A very old-fashioned YH, with a dour Scottish welcome at reception. I don't recommend the larger communal dorms - the women's one involves a long trek from basement to first floor showers, through reception and entrance hall. The one WC at basement level is unisex. The kitchen and dining room facilities are very good, and if you book a small [2 or 4-person] room, you are near the showers and get a much better deal. The YH is very centrally situated, and was geographically the perfect base for the Borders Book Festival which I attended in the town. There is also excellent walking - totably along the Tweed - straight from the hostel.

This is a hostel in a beautiful setting and so close to the heart of Melrose that everything is within walking distance. Highly recommended.

A great hostel - with excellent facilites. Quiet internally ( doors, carpetting etc ) and outside despite being very close to town. Good cooking facilites, internet, laundry, info leaflets - although there were better cycling ones at the Tourist Office (closes at 4p.m.)

Don't expect to get any cycle repair kit in Melrose nearest source is Gllashiels. Also note two bus companies operate between Merose and Gallashiels and they don't accept each others returns.

Ideally situated for the start of the St. Cuthberts Way - the 60 mile walk from Melrose to Holy Island.

Its a lovely hostel in its own great grounds beside Melrose Abbey. The hostel is in a substantial Victorian/Edwardian country villa and in lovely countryside. I would love to visit it again.

Melrose has good transport links to border villages and towns allowing you to explore the area with minimum hassle. The hostel has picnic tables in the grounds and border hills views.

Melrose YH is an ideal centre for a holiday in the Scottish Borders. Bring your bike! There is a cycle trail visiting the four abbeys - wish I'd brought mine. Though avoid the main roads - they are very busy and the traffic is very fast.

Excellent hostel. Beautiful building in beautiful surroundings in a beautiful village in a beautiful part of Scotland. What else is there?

Make sure that reception makes it clear to each hosteller that he has to make up his own bed; mine was commandeered by someone else!
Melrose Youth Hostel has all the ingredients for longer stay hostellers - waymarked paths crisscross the surrounding countryside, the Border Abbeys offer an historical prospective plus the nearby shops give Melrose that market town feel.

Thirteen of is arrived at the hostel at Melrose after cycling 70+ miles from Seahouses as part of the Coast & Castles bike ride... the SYHA sign was a very wecome site as you can imagine. All the facilities we needed were either at the hostel (e.g. secure bike storage) or in the town which was a very short walk away. We were pleasantly surprised to find an excellent italian restaurant in the town to carb up in before the final ride the next day to Auld Reekie....

In Melrose a good place to have a picnic/lunch is the tourist information garden - free and very pleasant. if you're walking St Cuthbert's Way allow an extra half day to explore Melrose Abbey - well worth 2 hours for a good look round.

Do not expect any real comfort apart from a hot room (great in the winter). Ensure they turn the drying room on as your kit will not be dry.
