This is an ideal course for those who would
like a practical introduction to, or revision of, the basic skills
needed for safety in the hills in winter. On the first day of this
weekend-long course will be spent practicing movement on snow
slopes, uses of an ice axe, performing self-arrests and step
cutting. It will also be used to talk about other elements such as
weather, mountain hazards, avalanche and snow slope analysis.
The second day is when the action begins! It
will be spent putting into practice all of the skills learnt the
previous day by a mountain walk on varied terrain. During this walk
there will also be the opportunity to practice constructing
emergency shelters, adding to the essential skills learned over the
weekend. As conditions during winter are often extremely varied on
the mountains of the Caringorms, the instructor will take the
opportunity to show the implications of different winter conditions
for hazard awareness. Route choice will also be covered.
